Handmade products invite a closer look at materials and workmanship. A few clear details help you choose something that fits your space, purpose and expectations.
Ask what the product is made from
For crochet and textile pieces, check the stated fibre composition. For other objects, ask about the principal material, finish and any components that affect use. Terms such as ‘natural’, ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘handmade’ are not substitutes for specific product information.
Read the measurements
A styled photograph gives context, but can make scale difficult to judge. Check dimensions in centimetres, how they were measured and whether a useful tolerance is provided. If a basket must fit a shelf or hold a particular object, share those measurements before ordering.
Understand variations without overlooking defects
Small differences in colour, stitch or finish can occur between individually made pieces. Ask what variation is expected and what is shown in the photographs. Handmade production does not mean that missing components, damage or a product materially different from its description should be accepted without enquiry.
Use the maker’s care instructions
Care depends on the actual material, construction and finish. Do not assume that every crochet product can be machine washed, or that the same cleaning method suits every material. Ask for the product-specific instructions and keep them with the item.
Check intended use
- Is the item decorative, functional or suitable for both?
- Are there limits on load, exposure to water or use near heat?
- Does the product include everything shown, or are styling accessories excluded?
- If it is intended for children, what age and safety information is provided?
A photograph or material name alone does not establish food-contact suitability, toy safety or any certification. Ask for relevant information where it affects your intended use.
For a custom piece, agree the brief first
Confirm dimensions, material, colour reference, quantity, price, expected completion and the point at which changes can no longer be made. Read the cancellation and return terms for that particular order.
